Currently the only objective is to kill 7 bosses. more sectors or distinct sectors, they all play the same crew to buy at level 1 (v annoying to only be presented with crew that have skills you don't want). All have the same max energy, shields, weapon power etc. starting conditions are different but most ships are basically the same.

Tried all the different weapon types and combos. at 22.8 hours i've unlocked all the ships, played maybe 4-5 runs of the free roam mode, unlocked 77% of weapons and 55% of achievements.
